FOR JANUARY, 1997 Please send your feedback directly to Michael S. Hart Books Index update from #737 to #776.
Please see also the November 1996 note entitled Meanwhile, we still managed to produce 32 Etexts per month last year, which are listed below on our usual format. We are also improving our web pages, and your comments and suggestions are most welcome. For those of you doing FTP [File Transfer Protocol], this is still the fastest way to do things if you know how, and the new GUTINDEX.96 file listing all the files to date is now present in all our /etext directories. Please be advised that filename INDEX?00.GUT files are still there, but that we obviously had to move to an index name format such as GUTINDEX.96 so that we didn't use more characters than allowed in the filename.ext format. . .i.e. we hope to be reaching the 1,000th file this >year, and INDEX1000.GUT would not suit that format. We are also VERY happy to announce that we received, for the first time, an array of just plain donations that were enough to pay for the month that we received them! I realize that much of that was due to the publicity we had received, and also due to the emergency situation, as well as the holidays. Nevertheless, it marks a huge change in the support we have received from a community of Internet and other users: and the month before last, received almost enough to pay for keeping Project Gutenberg running in November; the total for both months was enough to keep us running for both months. Thus, we can announce that Panic Day! has been moved back well into March. Information on making donations is included below. Thank you all so much! *** During this coming year, we would like to try to produce at least 32
Etexts in each of the following languages: In alphabetical order: We already have 32 Etexts lined up in French, which we hope to present in several versions, in an effort to preserve the accent marks, along with a version in Plain Vanilla ASCII for those whose computers will not work on high level ASCII characters. If you could help either with the creation, or translation to various formats, of Etexts in various languages, please let us know. Please also let us know if you should like to work in other languages than those listed above. We are even hoping to present some in Esperanto. Speaking of esperanza. . .we hope to continue bringing you Etexts for the foreseeable future. . .and we thank you for all your support. We do plan to have another edition of our CDROM out this month. So. . .if we manage to average 32 files in a dozen other languages in 1997, we can still manage to double the number of Etexts on our servers. Please feel free to forward or repost our Newsletter to appropriate sites or persons. One of the lights at the end of our tunnel that I have been made a "Visiting Scientist of the School of Computer Science at the Carnegie Mellon University" This support will take up some of the loss from the last year, and, along with your donations, will hopefully see us though 1997, which would include making our 1,000th Project Gutenberg Electronic Text. Please note changes in our email and snail mail addresses as below. To change your subscription address to Project Gutenberg or to subscribe or unsubscribe: send email to: To sub from a new address, send message from there: [That is "gutvol-L" NOT "gutvol-1"] *** You can get the Project Gutenberg books via FTP and the Web: *** Thanks!
